Climate Change -
What Does the Bible Say?
For many years now the argument of climate change has been on the minds of many. From scientists to politicians, everyone seems to have an opinion on the topic of global climate and what we should – or should not – being doing about it.
Christians might find this topic touchy. After all, many a conversation about climate change turns into an argument between Uncle Philip and your hippy cousin at family gatherings! Yet climate change need not be a divisive topic. Facts are facts, and Christians know that if anyone can be trusted to give us the facts, it’s Yahweh our God.
In this article, we will examine the topic of climate change. We set out to review God’s intentions for the earth, and to examine if humanity really has ruined the earth beyond repair.
The Science of Climate Change
In 1896, Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius first predicted that the earth could experience a global climate change due to increased greenhouses gasses in the atmosphere. The first recorded evidence of such change came in 1939 by scientist Guy Callendar. Since then, we have only seen global temperatures increase as greenhouse gas emissions continue to climb. Now they are as much as 150% of pre-industrial levels (Carbon dioxide concentration 2024). What does this mean?
Increased greenhouse gases have produced what is called the “greenhouse gas effect” (Basics of Climate Change 2024). As gases such as methane and CO2 are trapped in the atmosphere, surface temperatures begin to rise. At first, many doubted the predicted numbers, and now many continue to call into question the connection between rising global temperatures and human activity. In fact, some people deny that there are any changes to global climate! What is the truth?
Evidence undeniably links human activity to global climate change (Causes of Climate Change 2024). Our continued reliance on coal and oil releases an increasing rate of greenhouse gases, furthering the greenhouse gas effect in a cycle that feeds into itself. Simply put, as more greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere, more heat gets trapped on the earth’s surface. Yet the more the earth’s surface is heated, the more greenhouse gases are ultimately released. There are a variety of reasons that the increase in temperature causes more gases to be trapped. Aside from human activity in response to the rising temperatures, greenhouse gases also get released by melting ice and increased acidification of the oceans (Causes of Climate Change 2024).

That isn’t to say there aren’t any natural causes to climate change. By examining ice cores, tree rings, and ocean sediments, we know that the earth has always experienced periods of global warming and cooling. Volcanic eruptions contribute as much as 50% of what humans produce of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (Causes of Climate Change 2024). Yet what we see today vastly differs from what the earth experienced in the past. The global temperature rise has gone far beyond what studies suggest the earth ought to naturally experience.
We can see the effects of global climate change surrounding us, showing us undeniably the reality of global climate change. Rising global temperatures have caused problems such as glacier melting, rising ocean levels, and oceanic acidification. We also see an increase in severe weather duration and strength. Dust bowls are on the rise, forest fires have increased, and we even see changes in bird migration and floral blooming patterns.

The Bible on Climate Change
Important for Christians to remember is that, as a book from God, the bible cannot lie. After all, Yahweh is a God of truth (John 17:17). That means that observed science cannot and does not conflict with the bible’s message. This holds true for our observances of global climate change.
To Christians, the bible’s take on climate change should hold weight comparable to those of the scientific discussions surrounding this topic. For years theologists have argued with one another about what is called “ecotheology” (Horrell, 2010). While the bible does not outright mention climate change within its pages, it does talk about topics relating to the earth that would seem to imply that climate scientists are correct.
In the beginning, Yahweh God created the earth as a verdant paradise, loaded with plants, animals, and resources that were described as “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Raw creation as it was balanced itself; the animals ate the plants, and when the animals died, the plants absorbed the nutrients from the animals. The sun provided energy for the plants that, when eaten by the animals, gave energy to them. Every living thing had a place. Life was lived in a generous cycle that made the earth a special, beautiful place to live.
Adam was the first man, and his wife Eve was the first woman. Together, they were tasked with caring for the earth. As a team they were to subdue the wilds that God had created for them, the use the bountiful resources to create things of their own, to build houses and cities and towns (Genesis 1:28).
After the fall of man, the earth became corrupted. Balance was overthrown, and survival of the fittest took root. It took many generations, but mankind did begin to use their authority over the earth in ways that greatly displeased Yahweh God. The Genesis account of the Tower of Babel shows that it disappointed Yahweh to see what man had done, so much so that He confused the language of men so that they would be forced to disperse (Genesis 11:1-9).
By the time of Israel’s exile into Babylon, the corruption of the earth had increased so much that Yahweh found it to be a curse (Jeremiah 2:7). Yet this was just the beginning of the destruction of the earth. For hundreds of years, men continued in their defilement of our planet, and as a result, mankind was drawn further away from God’s beautiful creation.
In his time, Jesus the Messiah warned that mankind would see increasing lawlessness amongst us, and that we would see great turmoil over the earth (Luke 21:11). Again, lawlessness was predicted by Paul in his letter to the apostle Timothy. He described people, as time went on, to be selfish and vile, not caring for God’s intentions and only caring about ourselves (2 Timothy 3:1-4). When John received the revelation from God, Yahweh made it known that, in the end-times, man would completely destroy the earth (Revelation 11:18).
What these verses show us is that as man becomes increasingly corrupted away from Yahweh God, the earth suffers more and more as a result. Eventually, we will no longer be able to save the earth from mankind’s influence. The earth will become inhabitable.
Stopping the Destruction
After examining the facts, you may begin to wonder “what are we to do about it”? Where we are, there is still time to turn things around. We cannot completely undo climate change, but if we were to make drastic changes, humanity could stop the process from continuing, and even reverse some of its effects.
Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen. Too many people are confused, or flat out refuse to believe, that climate change is something to worry about. Since becoming a political issue, many people choose to act in ways that are deliberately harmful to the environment in favor of their political candidates. Remember, the bible said that mankind would completely destroy the earth before the end. Taking a serious look at the situation reveals this to be the only outcome we can accomplish on our own.
There is hope, however. While on our own, we cannot stop climate change, with God, anything is possible (Matthew 19:26). Yahweh allows mankind to continue our path for now, but He has made great promises for the future.
Through the bible we learn that Yahweh intends to make a new heaven and a new earth. Isaiah 24:5-6 predicts the future, where all will be destroyed. In the end, Yahweh will send a lake of fire to the earth to burn up sin and pain (Revelation 19:20). The earth will be burnt up by this fire, and in its place, a paradise will be planted. Yahweh has made it abundantly clear that this paradise will be on earth, and the righteous will inhabit it for all eternity (Psalm 37:29, Revelation 21:4)! Yahweh created the earth to be inhabited, and His purpose will be fulfilled (Isaiah 45:18, Isaiah 55:11)!
It Starts With You
There may not be anything we can do to stop the destruction of the earth, but we can do our best to mitigate our role in this calamity. If we truly love Yahweh, we wish to honor His original purpose for us, and take care of the planet He so graciously provided. We respect the loving care He put into its creation through the actions we take today.
We should strive to minimize our “carbon footprint” – that is, how much we contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Whenever we are not using a light, we should turn it off. If we choose to use public transportation or rideshare services, we reduce our footprint by reducing the amount of time we spend driving. We can also choose cars that are more eco-friendly, such as electric or high gas-mileage vehicles, or even bicycles depending on where we live. Even eating vegetarian one day out of a week can serve to reduce our carbon footprint as much as if we quit driving the entire week!

Other things we can do to help the environment are small steps to reduce our waste. The three R’s – reduce, reuse, and recycle help us avoid overreaching our share of waste products. We can begin composting things like food waste to help nurture the soil in our area. We should never litter, and if we see trash, we should pick it up as long as it is safe to do so.
When we truly examine the state of the earth, it is sad how far we have come down the path of destruction. Our planet is going through changes that will bring hardship to billions of people and animals. While humanity may not be able to stop it, Yahweh God has proven that He is here to help us. He brings us promises of the future, promises of a paradise restored and peace on the earth. In the meantime, He offers us comfort and strength to endure the hardships we see in the world today. By trusting in Yahweh and taking these small steps, we can show Yahweh that we value His creation, and help bring the earth to peace once more.
